FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
About Community Christian Church
Many questions get asked by visitors to church, newcomers to town, and friends and neighbors of our members. Here's a list of questions about the church that may help you get to know us better.
- Who are the Disciples of Christ?
We are a mainline Protestant denomination with almost 1 million members in theUnited States and Canada. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. We believe the Bible is God's word, and we give each person the freedom to responsibly interpret the Bible for themselves. We believe in working with all other Christians to do God's work here on earth. For more about who we are, click here.
- How big is the church?
Our church, founded in 1964, has grown into a healthy and vibrant congregation. We currently have a little over 300 active members and regular attenders. Our 8 a.m. service averages around 25 people; our 10 a.m. service usually has between 100-120 in attendance. We're big enough to support a wide range of programs and ministries, but small enough to greet each other by name on Sunday morning.
- What time is your Sunday worship service?
We meet for worship at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. every Sunday. The 8 a.m. service is held in Lanier Hall, our chapel located next to the church driveway. The 10 a.m. service is held in the sanctuary. For more descriptions of our worship, click here.
- What do you offer for children on Sunday morning?
Children are a special part of our congregation, and we value them as full participants in the life of our church. Our children share their gifts by singing regularly during our 10 a.m. worship service. Also during that worship service, we have a Children's Sermon, after which the children (up to 9th grade) leave for Sunday School. Our Sunday School classes are led by faithful, wonderful volunteers from the church.
- What do you offer for babies and toddlers?
We have a staffed and equipped nursery for both age groups. Our Infant Nursery, located in Friendship Hall, has a changing table and several cribs, and is staffed by volunteers from the congregation. Our Toddler Nursery, located right below the sanctuary in Thompson Hall, offers a spacious play area with plenty of toys - and supervision by a paid staff member. Our Toddler Nursery is run by an experienced childcare worker with a degree in education. Each Sunday, she is assisted by a member of our youth group. We also have a Quiet Room for parents who need time alone with their child. That room is also in Friendship Hall, right next to the Infant Nursery.
- Who goes to your church?
We have quite a mixture of people at CCC. Our congregation truly spans the ages, from newborns to folks in their 80s. You'll find just about every type of person here - married, single, divorced, widowed - professionals, workers, retired - doctors, lawyers, construction workers, and stay-at-home moms. Our largest group is young families with children. In fact, about one-third of our congregation is under the age of 18!
- Do I have to belong to your denomination to attend?
Not at all! In fact, the majority of our congregation comes from a church background other than the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We have many former Catholics, Lutherans, Presbyterians, and Methodists. We are a "patchwork" church - people with widely different church backgrounds "woven together" by God's grace.
- Do you have to dress up to attend your worship service?
No! Not only is it not required, it's not even expected. Some do choose to wear their "Sunday best," but you're just as likely to find someone in golf shirt and slacks, or even jeans. We're less concerned about your outward appearance than we are the fact that you appear!
- What kind of things do you do in your worship services?
We strive to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere at CCC. We greet each other so everyone feels welcomed; we share announcements and church news; we sing and listen to good music; we share our joys and concerns and lift them to God in prayer; we read the Bible and talk about it through the sermon; we collect an offering to further God's work; and we take communion weekly.
- Can a visitor take communion?
We take communion each week as a tangible reminder of God's gift to us in Jesus Christ. We believe in open communion - that means that anyone who believes in Jesus Christ is welcome to take communion, whether they are a church member or not.
- What other programs and ministries do you offer?
In addition to our Sunday morning activities, we have other ways for people to serve and get connected. There are both active women's and men's groups. We have Youth Groups for junior and senior high youth that meet on Sunday evenings. We have a Prayer Group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m., followed by a Bible study at 10 a.m. We have a choir, a number of fellowship events, several special events during the year (like our Garage Sale), and active committees that carry out God's work in the church. We also have a Stephen Ministry program. And those are just some of the things we do!
- Do you do any kind of community mission work?
We are passionate about mission work in the community and around the world. Once a month we serve at a Waukegan soup kitchen. We also tangibly support the work of two local shelters for abused women and their children by giving school supplies, birthday cards, etc. We provide fruit snacks and juice boxes for low-income families when they visit a local medical clinic. Each year, several youth and adults go on a summer mission trip. We also support two missionaries from this church who are working in foreign countries to spread God's word.
